Volunteer Descriptions
VOLUNTEERS....WE NEED EVERYONE!
Our volunteers make our swim team possible. It takes all of us to make this a great experience for our children!
Thank you to those families who have already gone on the website and signed up to volunteer for the season. If you have not signed up yet, there are still plenty of positions left to fill for each meet. If you are unsure about any of the positions, please contact Lauren Gaughen, our volunteer coordinator, at [email protected].
In order to have a successful swim season, at least one person per family is needed to work a half a meet if your child(ren) is swimming in that meet. A half-meet is defined as either the first half of a meet (events 1 - 43) or the second half (events 43 - 86).
How do I sign up to volunteer? Go to the swim meets tab. Click on it and the swim meets for the seasons will come up. There will be RSVP tabs and V tabs. The RSVP tab is where you will sign your child up for meets. The V tab is where you volunteer. It will give you the available positions. If your child is in the 5/6 age group, you will only want to volunteer for a first session slot. 5/6 swimmers are finished by the middle of the meet at event 43 which is when our second shift of volunteers start. Every volunteer will be able to watch their child swim! We love our volunteers! The volunteer coordinator will assign needed positions if families have not signed up to volunteer prior to meets.
It is clearly understood that situations arise, such as a sick swimmer, and a family is unable to fulfill their scheduled responsibility. In that case, it is the family's responsibility to find a substitute and we ask that the volunteer coordinator be notified of the change.
TRAINING IS PROVIDED FOR ALL VOLUNTEER POSITIONS. REGARDLESS OF POSITION, ALL VOLUNTEERS WILL BE ABLE TO WATCH ALL THEIR CHILD(REN) COMPETE.
Following is a list of the volunteer positions:
CONCESSIONS: 6 needed per home meet. To help raise funds, our team sells food and drinks at home meets. Volunteers will help prepare food and take orders & payments.
TIMERS: 4 to 6 needed per meet. Volunteers are provided with a stopwatch, clipboard, event cards, and a pencil. Timers stand at the end of a designated lane and time each swimmer, mark the time on the event card, and hand this card to a runner at the end of each race. This is a great job if if you like to be right in the action and encourage swimmers to swim fast!
RUNNERS: 2 needed per meet. Runners pick up the timer’s event cards after each race and deliver the cards to the scoring tables where the results are tallied. The opposing team also has runners, so at the start of the meet it is important that efforts are coordinated with one another. This volunteer position is a great way to get some exercise during the meet!
PLACE JUDGE WRITERS/CALLERS: Place judges sit at the end of the pool with a judge from the other team and record the order in which swimmers place. The runner will pick up this card to take to the scoring table. Great seats to watch the action. Be prepared to get wet!
Computer/Data Entry: 2 needed per meet. Volunteers are stationed at the scoring table. They will enter results into the meet manager program. This position requires at least one trained computer person per session. Prior experience on our computer program is recommended or a quick computer learner!
SCOREKEEPERS: 2 needed per meet. Volunteers are stationed under cover and keep a running tally of the team score with a scorer from the other team. Prior experience is preferable with this volunteer job or a quick learner with numbers! Not ideal for families with one parent present at meet with young children.
EVENT BOARD: 2 needed per home meet. Volunteers keep track of the event and heat numbers by turning number cards that the crowd can see. This is a good job if you want to stay in one place with your family.
STARTER: 1 needed per home meet. This is a trained position only for home meets.
SET UP/PARKING: Four volunteers needed home meets. The volunteers need to arrive at 4:00pm but you will be done by the time the meet starts. Responsible for helping set up club house for concessions, deck area chairs, volunteer seating, parking lot and parking signs around the neighborhood (this portion can be done during morning practice on the day of the meet). Involves some lifting.
FACILITIES COORDINATOR: 2 volunteers needed for home meets. This volunteer is responsible for restroom stocking/cleaning before, during and after the meet as well as trash removal during and after the meet.
GRILLMASTER: 2 volunteers needed for home meets only to operate the gas grill and cook burgers and hot dogs during the meet.
